Day 3: Monday April 18

Day 3 of the Invictus Games featured the finals in athletics, archery and sitting volleyball. You will find those results in our special corner for this. No numbers, no results in the daily highlights. But special stories about competitors, their relatives and a number of former competitors and veterans. All say first and foremost they find camaraderie at the Invictus Games. The result is not so important to them, it is about the road they took to The Hague.

Zoey van den Waardenburg still impresses every day at the Invictus Games Park. Joyce's 12-year-old daughter is still wearing the silver dress she wore during the opening ceremony. There she flawlessly quoted the poem Invictus, by the British poet William Ernest Henley, before a packed house. An impressive moment during that occasion that still generates many reactions to her every day.

Jaaike Brandsma can handle the whole world. That is clear. Three entries in the Invictus Games have made her a different person. She lost a leg in an attack in Afghanistan, which gave her a lot of challenges. However, she grabs het chances with both hands. She already went to the Paralympic Games as a competitor. And recently, along with some fellow citizens, she picked up two buses full of Ukrainians at the Polish

For four days, 32-year-old Tanya Lavin works as a volunteer at this Invictus Games. She is a teacher English in everyday life, but during this event she is active as a ‘ball girl’ in the sitting volleyball.

That the competitors at the Invictus Games are veterans is clear to most people. But it doesn’t stop there, also among the volunteers are quite a few people who work at Defense or have worked here. It was a special day for Herman Kroft, his wife Nellie and their four children: Rianne (16), Marlies (15), Thijs and Dorien (both 6). They were a day invited at the Invictus Games. And not without reason. Herman and his daughter Marlies are the main characters in the film The Mission. In it, the story of a family-with-a-father-on-a-mission is outlined. “It’s good to show that to all children.”

Children look around excited and you can also feel the tension rising among the adults. Everyone hears the dogs barking, but no one sees them already. In the Fanzone is the crowdmagnet of the past few days: the dog demonstration.
